Romania: Parliament rejects the third candidate for prime minister and prolongs the political crisis
BUCHAREST, September 30 /ATSH-AFP/ — The Romanian parliament today rejected the third candidacy for the post of prime minister as well, that of the pro-European liberal Siegfried Mureșan, prolonging the political crisis in the country.
Mureșan received only 182 votes in Parliament, while 233 votes were needed for the approval of his government.
His failure deepens the political deadlock and brings back into play the possibility of holding early elections.
These elections are demanded especially by the far right, which according to the latest polls ranks at the top of electoral support.
The situation is expected to remain unclear until the political forces find an agreement on forming a new government.
The crisis is putting increased pressure on the pro-European parties to secure a parliamentary majority and avoid a further political escalation.
