UKMTO: Three ships hit in the Strait of Hormuz — an LNG tanker and an oil tanker among them
The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations agency (UKMTO) announced on Wednesday that it had received several delayed reports of ships attacked in the Strait of Hormuz, as Al Jazeera reports.
According to three separate incident reports, the ships were hit on Tuesday. One of them was a liquefied natural gas (LNG) tanker, while another was a crude oil tanker. In each case, the ships were hit by an “unknown projectile” and the authorities are investigating. UKMTO also reported another incident: a ship hit while transiting Hormuz caught fire, which was later extinguished; the crew was reported safe and the ship continued its journey.
The attacks come as Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) says the “military conflict” continues daily in Hormuz, and as the U.S. naval blockade of Iranian ports and Tehran’s counter-blockade of commercial traffic in the strait continue in parallel with the exchange of peace proposals through mediators.
The Strait of Hormuz remains the key point of the seven-month U.S.–Iran conflict: before the war began in February, about 20 percent of the world’s oil and liquefied natural gas passed through it.
