After 13 years with Hauser & Wirth, Mira Schendel’s estate moves to Lisson and Gomide & Co.
After 13 years of exclusive worldwide representation by Hauser & Wirth — since 2013 — the estate of Mira Schendel, regarded as one of Brazil’s most important 20th-century artists, is changing hands. As ARTnews reports in its “On Balance” column (Industry Moves, October 1, 2026), the artist’s estate will now be represented by the blue-chip gallery Lisson, based in New York, and Gomide & Co. of São Paulo.

Born in Switzerland in 1919 and settled in São Paulo after the Second World War, Schendel built a deeply personal body of work, consciously standing apart from Brazil’s Concretist and Neo-Concretist groupings. She took part in the first São Paulo International Biennial in 1951, and her international recognition culminated in the major retrospective at Tate Modern in London in 2013–2014, which later traveled to Porto and São Paulo, as well as in MoMA’s exhibition “Tangled Alphabets” (2009), alongside León Ferrari.
The change of galleries comes at a moment when institutional and commercial interest in Brazilian modernism keeps rising. Lisson brings its global network of collectors, while Gomide & Co. anchors the estate in its home — São Paulo — a two-center combination expected to give Schendel’s work a new push on the international market.
Representations of artists’ estates are among the most significant moves in the gallery world, because they determine who is studied, exhibited and collected. With this move, one of the most esteemed names in 20th-century Latin American art joins the roster of one of the world’s most influential galleries.
