Carolina Hurricanes to raise championship banner, turn focus to defending the title
The Carolina Hurricanes will raise the banner commemorating the 2025-26 championship season at Lenovo Center, in a ceremony that closes a summer of celebrations and prepares the team for the season-opening game against the Florida Panthers.
As NHL reports, 20 of the 22 players who featured in the 2026 playoff run remain with the squad, a near-unprecedented level of stability for a Cup winner in the free-agency era. Goaltender Frederik Andersen left as a free agent for the Edmonton Oilers on 1 July, while defenseman Alexander Nikishin remains a restricted free agent without a deal. On Sunday the players received their commemorative rings in a private ceremony, with the Stanley Cup alongside them.
Captain Jordan Staal said the event will bring mixed emotions: joy at the achievement, but also the need to refocus quickly on the game. Staal, a Conn Smythe Trophy winner and part of something extraordinary after a 17-year wait since his first title with Pittsburgh in 2009, said it is exciting to share the moment with the fans, but the team must immediately turn its attention to the challenges of the new season.
Jalen Chatfield recalled his journey that began in the 2021-22 season as an unknown player, shaped by the support of the club’s core. He described the relationships in the locker room as “brothers” who helped him grow as a player and as part of the local community.
The Cup came after the Game 6 win over the Vegas Golden Knights, and on returning to the city the team celebrated with parades and public events. The Stanley Cup had never before been displayed in the arena, and this will be the first moment for fans to see it up close. Veterans, including Jordan Martinook, stressed that the fans deserve to share this moment with the team.
Star Sebastian Aho described the strong bond with the city and the organization, saying winning the Cup has created a lifelong connection between the players and the community. Coach Rod Brind’Amour has repeated during preparations that the team cannot live in the past and must focus on the challenge of repeating the success. The opener against the Florida Panthers is seen as a fitting test, given that the Panthers won the Cup in the two previous seasons.
In conclusion, NHL notes that the banner-raising ceremony will be a moment of celebration but also the starting point for refocusing on the new season’s goals, as the team looks to defend the title and face the expectations that come with it.
