CHANEL brings the crafts of Parisian ateliers to Shanghai with the “La Galerie du 19M” exhibition
CHANEL has brought the work of its artisanal ateliers to Shanghai with the exhibition “La Galerie du 19M SHANGHAI,” which opened on September 25, 2026 at the Museum of Art Pudong (MAP) and will remain open to the public until November 15, as ART IS ALIVE reports.
According to ART IS ALIVE, this is the third international chapter of le19M and the first presentation of its kind in China, a moment marking a new step in the French fashion house’s dialogue with the Asian public.
le19M is CHANEL’s Parisian center dedicated to métiers d’art — the crafts of art — opened in 2022 in the 19th arrondissement of Paris. There, independent ateliers of embroidery, feathers, artificial flowers, pleating, lace and others come together, which have worked side by side with CHANEL for entire decades.
The exhibition places these crafts against the contemporary cultural scene of Pudong, linking CHANEL’s French heritage with Shanghai’s growing role as an international center of art, design and fashion.
At the center of attention are the processes and craftsmanship behind the designs: the techniques, materials and skills of the specialists who bring the creations to life. le19M does not treat these techniques as historical artifacts, but develops them and passes them on to new generations of artisans, keeping them alive for the future.
The exhibition is hosted by the Museum of Art Pudong (MAP), located on the bank of the Huangpu River in Lujiazui and designed by architect Jean Nouvel; the museum opened its doors in 2021 and has become one of the main cultural landmarks of the Chinese metropolis.
