CLS: Serbia’s presidential election possibly on December 13 — to be called after parliamentary vote
December 13 is the most seriously considered date for Serbia’s presidential election, the Center for Local Self-Government (CLS) has learned, as reported by the newspaper Danas. According to the center’s data, the presidential election would be called only after the October 25 parliamentary elections, and the election campaign would last no more than 30 days.
“Although all options are still open, the presidential election must already be taken into account, and its political importance should not be underestimated,” the CLS statement, quoted by Danas, said.
Aleksandar Vučić resigned as president of Serbia on Sunday evening, and on Monday formally handed over the office to National Assembly Speaker Ana Brnabić, who will serve as acting president. Under the Constitution, Brnabić may remain in the acting post for a maximum of 90 days.
This means Serbia will vote twice within two months: first for parliament on October 25, where Vučić is running as the head of the “United Serbia” list, and then for the country’s new president. The official campaign usually lasts between 30 and 60 days, and the election must be completed within the 90-day deadline set by the Constitution.
