‘Diasporican Abstraction’ Opens in San Juan: Over 50 Artists Take Over the Entire Museum of Contemporary Art of Puerto Rico
SAN JUAN – The exhibition “Diasporican Abstraction: Identities Beyond Representation” opened on Saturday evening, September 26, 2026, at 7:00 PM local time, at the Museo de Arte Contemporáneo de Puerto Rico (MAC) in San Juan, taking over the museum’s entire building, as 787 Daily reports.
The exhibition brings together more than 50 artists and collectives from different generations and explores abstraction through experiences of migration, memory, displacement, the body, territory and cultural exchange. According to the curators, the diaspora is presented not as a consequence of displacement but as an active site of cultural production — thus closing the divide between art created in Puerto Rico and that of Puerto Rican artists living and working outside the island.
The exhibition’s curators are Abdiel D. Segarra Ríos (associate curator) and Marianne Ramírez Aponte (chief curator and executive director of the MAC). Among the participating names are Zilia Sánchez, Rafael Ferrer, Olga Albizu, Gisela Colón, Lee Quiñones, Ángel Otero, Tony Bechara and Raphael Montañez Ortiz.
The exhibition includes painting, sculpture, installation, photography and performance, with works from the collection of El Museo del Barrio in New York, from private collections as well as from the MAC’s permanent collection. It will remain open to the public through March 28, 2027, as Lunatica also reports.
