DPA: Berane Hospital Violated Personal Data Protection Law — Surveillance Cameras Filmed Patients

Montenegro’s Agency for Personal Data Protection and Free Access to Information (AZLP) has found that the Berane Clinical-Hospital Center (KBC Berane) violated the Personal Data Protection Law through the way it used the video surveillance system on hospital premises.

According to AZLP, the procedure began following an anonymous surveillance initiative submitted on August 14. On September 3, the agency’s inspectors carried out supervision at KBC Berane to verify the lawfulness of personal data processing through video surveillance.

During the inspection, it was found that camera no. 4 (Radiology), placed in the waiting room of the radiological diagnostics service, covered the area where patients and visitors stay, including the waiting chairs — something the law does not allow.

AZLP ordered that camera no. 4 be relocated or software-masked so that it no longer covers the waiting area. It also ordered the deletion of all video recordings from camera no. 4 and camera no. 15 (the corridor at the entrance to the maternity ward) made during periods when they covered areas in violation of the law, as well as measures to prevent further storage and processing of this data.

According to the agency, KBC Berane notified AZLP within the set deadline that the identified irregularities had been eliminated. The full supervision report is available on AZLP’s official website.
