Heating prices rise in Serbia: firewood, pellets, coal and electricity — how much will winter cost citizens?

Serbia’s heating season officially begins on October 15 — last year it started as early as October 2 — and citizens are rushing to secure firewood, pellets and coal before winter.

Compared to last year, firewood prices have risen by 2,000–3,000 dinars per cubic meter. Seller listings range from 6,000 to 10,000 dinars per cubic meter: beech wood around 8,500 dinars, oak 9,200, acacia and ash 9,500, cut oak–acacia up to 10,000, while poplar costs 7,000 dinars per cubic meter.

Briquettes sell for around 36,000 dinars per ton, coal 15,000–28,000 dinars per ton depending on type, and pellets cost 33,000–50,000 dinars per ton — the cheapest found at around 33,000 dinars.

District heating in Belgrade and electricity

For district heating in Belgrade, the Supervisory Board approved on August 26 a tariff change effective October 1: the variable per-kilowatt-hour portion drops by about 5.57 percent, but the fixed capacity tariff rises by 18.02 percent. For users billed by heated area, the price for apartments rises 9.44 percent — from 1,679.35 to 1,837.89 dinars per square meter per year — while hot water preparation becomes 10 percent more expensive for all users.

Meanwhile, electricity bills are expected to rise 3.7–4.7 percent in October or by year’s end, according to the agreed formula, while block-tariff thresholds are being tightened.
