Kurti Challenged by Students in the U.S. Over Gërvalla’s Silence

Prime Minister Albin Kurti was challenged by Albanian students in the United States over the failure of Justice Minister Donika Gërvalla to react after the four former KLA leaders were sentenced to 81 years in prison.

In a conversation with students, as heard in a video published by VOX Kosova, student Laura Dragusha asked Kurti: “Why hasn’t she addressed the citizens of Kosovo to publicly clarify her stance and her actions regarding this matter? Citizens have the right to know clearly where the institutions stand in the face of what you yourself just called unjust.”

The question comes after Gërvalla had said years earlier that she would send evidence to the Specialist Court against Hashim Thaçi and Kadri Veseli; some protesters in Prishtina have demanded her resignation.

Kurti responded that cherry-picking Gërvalla’s statements and the “emotional reaction” to them is “great harm” done to the former KLA leaders in The Hague: “Donika Gërvalla is the wrong target. Don’t turn her into a target and try in this way to help Hashim Thaçi, Kadri Veseli, Jakup Krasniqi and Rexhep Selimi, because it will not happen.”

Another student, Anisë Murseli, defended her friend’s question, saying it was not an “emotional reaction” and that citizens’ demand to know the minister’s stance is reasonable in a democratic country.
