Lavrov Arrives in New York for UN General Assembly: Meeting With Rubio on Ukraine Expected Today

NEW YORK – Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov arrived in New York this morning to take part in the high-level week of the United Nations General Assembly, the RIA Novosti correspondent in the American capital reported today (September 23). The news was also covered by the Ukrainian outlet The Kyiv Independent.

According to RIA Novosti, on the sidelines of the high-level session the Russian diplomacy chief will hold a series of bilateral meetings and multilateral consultations, including a ministerial meeting of the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO), the Moscow-led military alliance.

International diplomacy’s attention is focused on an announced meeting between Lavrov and U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio. Russian Foreign Ministry official Kirill Logvinov told the state agency TASS a day earlier that the Rubio–Lavrov meeting is planned for Wednesday, as the United States continues diplomatic efforts to end the Russia–Ukraine war.

Lavrov’s visit comes just one day after the highly anticipated meeting between U.S. President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky at UN headquarters. At the end of the talks, Zelensky said Ukraine is ready for “any format” of energy ceasefire with Russia, while warning that Moscow is preparing a new “massive attack” against Ukraine.

Rubio and Lavrov have met several times over the past year as part of the Trump administration’s efforts to broker an end to the war Russia launched in February 2022. Today’s meeting is expected to be another test for the prospects of a diplomatic solution to the bloodiest conflict in Europe since World War II.
