Marina Abramović Brings Performance Art Into the Digital World, Announces ‘METHOD’ Project With Taex
125 digital-avatar performances inspired by the methods of the Marina Abramović Institute will be released this fall — the spectator becomes a participant through sustained attention.
London-based digital gallery Taex and renowned performance artist Marina Abramović have announced “METHOD”, the continuation of their digital-avatar project. The project is expected to launch this fall.
The project is based on the teachings and methods developed at the Marina Abramović Institute (MAI) and comprises 125 different digital performances — avatars of varying durations performing exercises familiar to Abramović’s followers, such as walking backwards holding a mirror or opening and closing a door.
The core concept of “METHOD” is the active role of the spectator: through sustained attention, the very act of watching becomes a form of participation. The idea reflects concepts Abramović explored decades ago in her iconic works “Rhythm 0” and “Rhythm 5” (1974).
The project follows a series of career milestones for the artist: the 700-hour performance at New York’s MoMA (2010), the Royal Academy exhibition (2026-09-20) and the solo show at MoMA Shanghai (2024). With “METHOD”, Abramović takes performance art into a lasting digital form.
