Overnight Russian strike on Kyiv: educational institution hit in Solomianskyi, fires across districts of the capital
Kyiv woke on Tuesday to the aftermath of another overnight Russian strike. The Ukrainian capital’s military administration, as LaPresse reports citing the RBC-Ukraine agency, said that in the Solomianskyi district the remains of a missile fell in the courtyard of a residential building and onto an administrative building, while a building of an educational institution was hit directly and caught fire. In the Pechersk district, a non-residential building was engulfed in flames.
The Ukrainian air force had warned at around 01:20 in the morning that new ballistic missiles were heading toward Kyiv, while air defenses were activated and explosions were heard across the city, according to a Reuters witness. According to official Ukrainian reports, assessments of the scale of damage and of possible casualties are ongoing.
The overnight strike comes just hours after another wave of hits. On Monday, Kyiv mayor Vitali Klitschko announced that two people were killed and 26 injured, among them three children, while the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine was also hit.
According to the Interfax-Ukraine agency, President Volodymyr Zelensky said Monday’s Russian strikes left a total of 9 dead and more than 80 injured across the country. Zelensky has accused Russia of using faster jet drones, which Ukrainian air defenses manage to intercept only partially — just over half of them. Overnight alone, Russian strikes against the Sumy region and three other regions injured at least two people, according to the Kyiv Independent.
Kyiv’s military administration said the full toll of damage and casualties would be updated in the coming hours, while rescue teams continue working on the ground.
