Serbia recorded 4,974 births and 7,427 deaths in August; population down 604,515 in 14 years

Serbia continues to face a serious demographic crisis. According to the latest data from the Statistical Office of the Republic of Serbia (RZS), 4,974 births and 7,427 deaths were recorded in August 2026 — a negative natural increase of 2,453 people in a single month.

The data show that 41,240 babies were born and 66,360 people died in the first eight months of 2026.

Over the past 14 years, Serbia’s population has shrunk by 604,515 people, according to official statistics — a trend demographers describe as alarming for the country’s future.
