Spelman College Museum Celebrates 30th Anniversary: “Between Here & Infinity” Brings Together Nearly 70 Works by African-American Artists

The Spelman College Museum of Fine Art in Atlanta, Georgia, is celebrating its 30th anniversary with the largest exhibition in its history: “Between Here & Infinity: Celebrating 30 Years of the Spelman College Art Collection”. The exhibition gathers nearly 70 works by African-American artists from the museum’s permanent collection — painting, sculpture, textiles, photography and mixed media — and is the first to span both of its galleries.

The first opening took place on September 9, 2026, in the Bank of America Gallery of the Mary Schmidt Campbell Center for Innovation and the Arts — a new center opened in 2025 — and runs through December 5, 2026. The exhibition’s second wave opens on October 1, 2026, in the Cosby Gallery, marking the first time a single exhibition fills both of the museum’s spaces.

Curated by Dr. Chaunesti Webb-Johnson, the exhibition is organized around the layers of Earth’s atmosphere — Root, Threshold, Interior, Expanse and Horizon — representing the African-American feminist imagination. Among the selected artists are prominent names such as Faith Ringgold, Kara Walker, Carrie Mae Weems, Zanele Muholi, Betye Saar, Lorna Simpson, Toyin Ojih Odutola, LaToya Ruby Frazier, Sonia Boyce, Firelei Báez, Deborah Roberts and Elizabeth Catlett.

The Spelman College Museum is one of the world’s leading institutions dedicated to the art of women of the African diaspora. Spelman’s arts history dates back to the early 1930s, when teachers such as Hale Woodruff and Nancy Elizabeth Prophet laid the foundations of a tradition that continues today. Museum director Liz Andrews said the exhibition honors the generations of curators and artists who have dreamed and built this museum over three decades. The exhibition is supported by the Mellon Foundation and others.
