‘The home of the future’: LACMA opens two exhibitions on visions of modern living
The Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) opened two new exhibitions yesterday, September 27, 2026, at the Resnick Pavilion: ‘Home of the Future, 1925–1985: Designing Domestic Utopias’ and ‘The Kitchen and Its Discontents.’ As ArtDaily reports in today’s coverage, the exhibitions will remain open to the public through March 14, 2027.
They include more than 260 objects — architectural models, drawings, photographs, films and furniture — telling a century of visions of the ideal home: from ‘self-cleaning’ kitchens to plastic houses and the first desktop computers, as ArtDaily reports.
Special attention is devoted to the kitchen: ‘The Kitchen and Its Discontents’ juxtaposes Margarete Schütte-Lihotzky’s famous Frankfurt Kitchen (1926–1930) with Charlotte Perriand’s kitchen for Le Corbusier’s Unité d’habitation (1948–1950), through photographs by Jona Frank, Mary Frey, Joanne Leonard, Laurie Simmons and others, as well as Martha Rosler’s iconic work ‘Semiotics of the Kitchen.’
Curator Wendy Kaplan says “the American home of the future was always somewhere else, just beyond the horizon… every utopia is a mirror, reflecting our dreams as much as our blind spots.”
Meanwhile LACMA CEO Michael Govan calls the exhibition “a provocation: a reminder that the homes we live in today were once someone’s radical ideas — an act of imagination and a leap of faith.”
