‘The Love Hypothesis’ arrives today on Prime Video: Ali Hazelwood’s long-awaited romance with Lili Reinhart and Tom Bateman

The film “The Love Hypothesis” arrives today, September 23, 2026, exclusively on Prime Video, in a global streaming premiere that will be available in more than 240 countries and territories. The film is the adaptation of Ali Hazelwood’s bestselling novel, one of the most beloved romances of recent years, and will have no theatrical release — fans of the book can watch it only on Amazon’s platform.

At the center of the story is Olive Smith (Lili Reinhart), an impulsive PhD student who, to prove to her friend that she has moved on after a breakup, accidentally kisses a man in the lab hallway — who turns out to be Dr. Adam Carlsen (Tom Bateman), the young, cold and intimidating professor. To save both their reputations, Olive and Adam agree on a deal: a fake relationship that soon turns into something very real.

Lili Reinhart, known from the series “Riverdale”, brings Olive to life with all her energy and sensitivity, while Tom Bateman plays the charismatic Professor Adam Carlsen. Direction is by Claire Scanlon, the screenplay was written by Sarah Rothschild, and author Ali Hazelwood herself is executive producer alongside Elizabeth Cantillon. Filming took place in Montreal in the summer of 2025, and the supporting cast includes Rachel Marsh, Nicholas Duvernay, Jaboukie Young-White and Arty Froushan.

The story behind the film is as enchanting as the film itself: the 2021 novel began in 2018 as “Head Over Feet”, a Star Wars fan fiction based on the romance between Rey and Kylo Ren — even the protagonist’s name, Adam, is a homage to Adam Driver. And the irony of fate: Tom Bateman is married to Daisy Ridley, the actress who played Rey in the Star Wars saga.

The trailer debuted at Prime Video’s Obsessed Fest, while the full trailer was released on August 26, igniting the enthusiasm of millions of readers worldwide.
