The Met Announces First Major Felix Gonzalez-Torres Exhibition in New York in Over 30 Years: ‘The Spaces Between’ Opens in June

The Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York will present in summer 2027 the first major exhibition dedicated to conceptual artist Felix Gonzalez-Torres in this city in more than three decades. The exhibition, titled ‘The Spaces Between,’ opens in June and is organized in collaboration with the Art Institute of Chicago, which will simultaneously host another exhibition dedicated to the artist.

Instead of being installed in the modern and contemporary art wing, more than 40 works — installations, sculpture, photography, painting and video — will be spread across 14 of The Met’s permanent collection galleries. The museum’s director and CEO, Max Hollein, said this places the artist’s work “in dialogue with 5,000 years of human creativity.” The exhibition’s title derives from a line in an Elizabeth Bishop essay that the artist had faxed to gallerist Andrea Rosen in 1994.

Among the key works are ‘Untitled (Go-Go Dancing Platform)’ (1991) — a light-blue platform with 48 light bulbs, activated daily by a dancer in silver shorts, socks and sneakers, as an elegy for gay men affected by AIDS; ‘Untitled (Perfect Lovers)’ (1987–90), a pair of clocks destined to fall out of sync; as well as the candy pile ‘Untitled (Revenge)’ (1991), recalling the 175-pound candy portrait of the artist’s boyfriend, who died of an AIDS-related illness that same year.

Gonzalez-Torres, a Cuban-American artist, died in 1996 of AIDS-related complications. David Breslin, The Met’s curator of modern and contemporary art, described his body of work as “a body of work that changed history.” His last major solo exhibition was held at the Museo Reina Sofía in Madrid.
