U.S. Urges Citizens to Stay Vigilant in Nine Middle East Countries: Saudi–Houthi Clashes Could “Escalate Quickly”
The United States has urged its citizens in Iraq, Bahrain, Oman, Saudi Arabia, Iran, Qatar, Lebanon, Kuwait and Jordan to exercise “increased vigilance,” warning that the security environment remains complex with potential for unforeseen escalation, Al Jazeera reports in its live war blog.
The alerts, which focus on the fighting between the Houthis and Saudi Arabia, including attacks that have hit civilian airports, warn that “this military conflict has the potential to escalate quickly.” In separate security alerts dated September 19, U.S. diplomatic missions in the nine countries said the situation in the Middle East presents “the risk of flight cancellations, airspace closures and travel disruptions as regional tensions rise.”
They also warned that Iran and Tehran-backed groups could strike U.S. interests abroad or locations associated with Americans. U.S. citizens were advised to monitor airline and airport operations, avoid demonstrations and large gatherings, and follow the instructions of local authorities.
The warning comes amid a sharp escalation between the Iranian-backed Houthis and Saudi Arabia: the group claims to have attacked targets in Riyadh and an Aramco facility in Yanbu, while Saudi air defenses say they intercepted a ballistic missile aimed at the capital. The energy crisis and traffic through the Strait of Hormuz remain under severe pressure.
