‘We Will Soon Forget Diana’: What King Charles Told Her Brother Revealed

King Charles has reacted after the publication of one of the first excerpts from the new book by Charles Spencer, the late Princess Diana’s brother.

On September 16, the Daily Mail published a fragment from “Swan Song: Diana, My Sister,” the memoirs of the 9th Earl Spencer, expected to be published on September 22.

In the book, Spencer, 62, recounts a phone call with the then Prince Charles, shortly after Diana’s death on August 31, 1997.

According to Spencer, the conversation between them grew tense during a discussion about William and Harry, who at the time were 15 and 12 years old respectively.

Spencer claims Charles was angry and, at one point in the phone call, told him: “Rest assured, we will soon forget.”

After the fragment’s publication, a Palace spokesperson gave a rare statement.

“Although as a matter of principle we do not comment on books, His Majesty is aware that the pain of losing a brother or sister can cloud reason, affect judgment and color memory in ways others do not recognize, even many years after such a loss,” the statement said.

The debate, according to Spencer, began over the decision for William and Harry to walk behind their mother’s coffin during the funeral ceremony.

In the BBC’s 2017 documentary “Diana, 7 Days,” William and Harry said the decision had been made by the family. William described it as a difficult, collective decision.

In his 2023 memoirs, “Spare,” Harry also recounted that several adults were against the decision and that his uncle, Charles Spencer, had strongly opposed it.

The book “Swan Song: Diana, My Sister” was announced last month and marks the first time Spencer speaks extensively and openly about his sister.

“The purpose of this book is to tell the truth about Diana from her brother’s perspective,” Spencer said, adding that he wants to speak on her behalf in a positive way.

After recording the audio version of the book, Spencer described it as the “most personal book” he has ever written.

“This is, in essence, a simple tribute of a brother to an extraordinary sister,” he wrote.

Meanwhile, days before the book’s publication, the Daily Mail reported that four copies of it had been stolen from a truck in the Netherlands.

A publishing industry source described the theft as “highly suspicious,” stressing that security measures for the book had been extraordinarily tight for fear that its contents could be published prematurely.
