‘Wicked’ director on the Britney Spears biopic: casting is not a priority right now — ‘We’re trying to find the story’

‘Wicked’ director Jon M. Chu has given a new update on the Britney Spears biopic during the opening gala of the George Lucas Museum of Narrative Art in Los Angeles, in an interview with Variety.

Chu revealed that casting is not a priority for now: ‘I get emails every day, hundreds of emails from people all over the world. Thank you for all of your auditions,’ he said, adding: ‘I’m not thinking about casting at all right now. We’re just trying to get the story right.’

The film is based on Spears’ 2023 bestselling memoir ‘The Woman in Me.’ Universal Pictures bought the film rights in 2024, with producer Marc Platt.

The screenplay is being written by Liz Meriwether; Chu said he has read parts of it and found them ‘incredible, deep, beautiful’ — adding that he had already said too much.

When asked whether he had spent time with Spears herself, the director did not answer directly: ‘I can’t say anything right now.’ He admitted he is introducing his children to Spears’ songs, including ‘Baby One More Time.’

No actor has been announced for the project yet, so it remains in the early stages of development.
