Amazon and Sony are developing a ‘Clone Saga’ series with Spider-Man’s two clones
Prime Video is very close to giving the green light to a new live-action series set in the universe of Sony Pictures’ Marvel characters, based on the notorious “Clone Saga” from the Spider-Man comics – as Deadline exclusively revealed on September 29.
According to sources cited by Deadline, the series will focus on Spider-Man’s two best-known clones, Ben Reilly and Kaine Parker – the protagonists of the second arc of the “Clone Saga”, the controversial 1990s storyline in which Peter Parker was temporarily replaced by his clone. Script details are still unclear: one version envisages the pair discovering they are clones and confronting other clones, while another could change their identities completely.
The writing of the series has been entrusted to Kelvin Yu, the creator of the television adaptation of “American Born Chinese”, while executive producers are expected to be Amy Pascal, Phil Lord and Christopher Miller – the same people who oversee the Spider-Man television universe for Sony Pictures Television and produced “Spider-Noir”. The comics will serve as “source material and inspiration”, but with possible considerable changes.
The news comes just a few weeks after Prime Video cancelled “Spider-Noir”, the series starring Nicolas Cage in the role of Ben Reilly, after a single season – despite critical success, with 11 Emmy nominations and four awards won. In the comics, Spider-Man Noir is Peter Parker, but for the series the identity was changed to Ben Reilly because of rights restrictions, the same reason that makes it impossible to use Peter Parker in this new project as well. The still-untitled “Clone Saga” series is expected to debut first on MGM+ and then air on Prime Video.
