Falsified COVID certificate: Switzerland coach on Xhaka — ‘He understands he made a mistake; I’m convinced we’ll find a solution’

Switzerland coach Murat Yakin has spoken about Granit Xhaka’s situation after the case of the falsified vaccination certificate during the COVID pandemic.

The Swiss captain has admitted the mistake and, according to Yakin, has taken public responsibility for his actions.

“Granit understands he made a mistake. He’s sorry and has taken responsibility publicly,” Yakin declared to “Blick”.

Xhaka was scheduled to join Switzerland in Belek for the upcoming matches’ preparations. However, after talks with SFV president Peter Knabel, he decided to stay away from the national team for a few weeks.

The decision aims to avoid distracting the team with the public debate around the issue. Yakin admitted the midfielder’s absence is a sporting loss for Switzerland.

“It is certainly a big pity from a sporting point of view to have to do without him,” he said.

However, the Swiss coach believes the decision taken is the right one at this moment.

On Xhaka’s return for the next gathering, Yakin did not give a final answer. The situation is expected to be discussed by the SFV with the captain after the national team’s four matches.

“I’m convinced we’ll find a good solution for everyone,” Yakin stressed.

He added that he is in constant contact with Xhaka and praised his attitude toward the team.
