How Russian agents planned the assassination of Garry Kasparov
According to a report in the newspaper El Mundo, Russian opposition figures are said to have been targeted by a network linked to Russian intelligence services (the RIS Network), which was planning the assassination of dissidents in the United States.
Based on this, among the dissidents targeted by the network were former world chess champion Garry Kasparov, former State Duma deputy Ilya Ponomaryov and Russian dissident Vladimir Kara-Murza.
Earlier in September, the FBI and other American agencies announced the uncovering of the Russian Intelligence Service (RIS) network, which according to them included 63-year-old former FSB colonel Yuri Khrameyev, also known as “Colonel Yuri”, his 27-year-old son Kirill Khrameyev, an officer of Russia’s Federal Security Service (FSB), and 35-year-old Cuban citizen Oemis Romagosa Durruti, who lives in Russia.
Also included were 35-year-old Cuban citizen Yaidel Delgado Suarez, also known as “Viking”, and 22-year-old Venezuelan citizen Angel Eduardo Castro, who took part with Suarez in recruiting individuals residing in the US for the purpose of surveilling and attempting to assassinate a prominent Russian dissident residing in the US, as stated in a statement by the Department of Justice.
According to the US Department of Justice, the men in question recruited paid individuals to monitor and ultimately to kill two people in the US and one in Lithuania.
The Kremlin and the Russian embassy in Washington have not commented on the US accusations, although Moscow has previously denied carrying out targeted assassinations abroad.
