Belgrade mayor questioned by prosecutors as a suspect in the attack on an opposition councilor
The mayor of Belgrade, Aleksandar Šapić, was questioned today at the Third Basic Public Prosecutor’s Office in Belgrade, as part of the evidentiary actions into the incident of September 28, 2026, as the Insajder portal reports.
The prosecution’s statement says that the suspect Aleksandar Š. was questioned and the injured party Tatjana M. was heard. The suspect presented his defense in the presence of his defense counsel, while the injured party was questioned in the capacity of injured witness, in the presence of her lawyer.
The prosecution adds that it will next assess the statements given before the prosecution alongside the other evidence collected so far, including video recordings, medical documentation and other available evidence, after which a decision will be taken in accordance with the law. The public will be informed in due time about the continuation of the procedure.
Šapić is accused of attacking opposition councilor Tanja Mičić on September 28 and breaking her nose — the fracture was medically confirmed. He denies hitting her, saying he did not strike her but pushed her, while the opposition is demanding his resignation and dismissal. The act was also condemned by Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić himself.
