International Day of Democracy
The International Day of Democracy, observed every September 15, serves as an opportunity to reflect on the state of democracy in the world.
UN Secretary-General António Guterres emphasized on this day the importance of involving citizens in decision-making through dialogue, cooperation and listening to different viewpoints. The UN underscores that democracy is not only an objective, but also a process that requires the full participation of institutions, civil society and citizens.
“Whenever we choose dialogue over division and cooperation over confrontation, we strengthen democracy,” Guterres declared.
On this day, the UN also recalls the importance of freedom of expression, guaranteed by Article 19 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, as a fundamental right for every individual.
The UN will hold an event dedicated to participatory democracy at its headquarters, focusing on how the citizens’ voice can strengthen trust, transparency and accountability in governance.
