Kurti in New York: “We Will Work to Correct the Verdict Against the Former KLA Leaders”

Kosovo Prime Minister Albin Kurti has held in New York a conversation with young Albanian diaspora in the US, themed “Between Here and Home”, organized by the Albanian-American groups ZANI, F’Oda and the Columbia University Albanian Society.

Kurti announced that in the Kosovo delegation, besides Government members, are also the mayor of Presheva, Ardita Sinani, and MP Shaip Kamberi.

During the meeting, according to Kurti, a series of issues were discussed, including economic developments in Kosovo, the justice system, gender equality and cooperation among Albanians in the Western Balkans and the diaspora.

Kurti stressed that Kosovo’s economy grew 5.4 percent in the first quarter of this year, while declaring that unemployment fell from 26 percent to 10 percent during his government.

Part of the discussion was also devoted to the judicial system, for which Kurti said further improvements in integrity and performance are needed, referring also to criticism included in international reports, including European Commission reports.

The prime minister also spoke about the decision of the Kosovo Specialist Chambers in The Hague against the former KLA leaders. He declared that the Government of Kosovo will work to support efforts to challenge this decision.

“The Government of the Republic of Kosovo is committed to providing support, in every way and with all means at its disposal, with the aim of correcting the verdict of the Specialist Chambers against the former KLA leaders, which is legally and morally unjust, and historically and factually inaccurate,” Kurti declared.

He said a state strategy agreement is needed on the response to the first-instance decision, both in supporting defense teams in appeal instances and on the diplomatic level.

“We will cooperate with our international allies, we will engage relentlessly in the defense of our liberation war against Serbia’s propaganda, and at the same time, in shedding light on massacres and other crimes of Serbia in Kosovo,” Kurti said.

According to him, official Belgrade, more than 27 years after the end of the war, continues to try to hide these crimes.
