LeBron explains why he chose the 76ers and avoided the Knicks after leaving the Lakers
After leaving the Lakers as a free agent, LeBron James explained the reasons that pushed him not to sign with the New York Knicks and to prefer the Philadelphia 76ers. He said he had dreamed of finishing his career at Madison Square Garden and described it as one of the best places he has played.
According to Bleacher Report, LeBron told ESPN’s Dave McMenamin that, although he considers the Garden the number-one arena for a basketball player, after the Knicks’ win over San Antonio he realized he could not make that move. He added that the NBA media would never have left him alone had he joined a team that had just won the title.
James, a 22-time All-Star, has always been very careful in his sporting and personal decisions. At 41, he said he could no longer take on reshaping a team as he once did and that he now thinks about his career season by season, avoiding commitments that do not match his immediate goals.
In the case of the 76ers, LeBron judged the team’s roster strong enough to compete for a title, but not so complete as to trigger accusations of stealing championships. The article also cites the example of Kevin Durant, who was criticized after joining an already successful organization, to illustrate how the public and media perceive star moves.
LeBron concluded by stressing that he was looking for a situation where he could fight for a title without being accused of “ring-chasing,” an approach that, as Bleacher Report itself noted, made the 76ers the most suitable alternative for this stage of his career.
