Macura in New York: Speaks on Panels About Gender Equality and Women’s Health

Serbia’s caretaker minister Tatjana Macura, tasked with coordinating activities in the field of gender equality and women’s empowerment, held talks in New York with Swedish Foreign Minister Marija Malmer Stenergard and the executive director of the UN agency for women (UN Women), Sima Bahus, on women’s empowerment and gender equality — her cabinet announced.

Macura took part in the panel “Women’s Economic Empowerment: Partnership to Progress,” organized by Stenergard and Bahus, as well as the event “Accelerating Progress for Women and Children: Advancing Gender Equality, Maternal and Child Health and the Well-being of Future Generations.” There she declared that Serbia is committed to women’s reproductive health and their freedom to make informed decisions about their bodies and parenthood, through the campaign “Za srce više” (For one more heart).

With the Swedish minister, Macura also discussed the rights and position of the Serbian diaspora, while with Egypt’s Foreign Minister she discussed the continuation and advancement of bilateral cooperation — thanking her for the participation of the Egyptian government’s representative at RISE 2026. In New York she also met representatives of Guinea-Bissau, the United Arab Emirates and Botswana, as well as UNICEF’s global director for child protection and migration, Sima Sen Gupta.

Macura presented the platforms “Sigurno i bezbedno” (Safe and Protected) and “Čuvam te” (I’m Protecting You), aimed at preventing and protecting children from violence, as well as the work of the National Coalition for preventing child marriages. She declared that in Serbia child marriages are present among around six percent of the general population and around 56 percent of the Roma population, stressing that it is important for the National Coalition to have a full institutional framework and to act more intensively at the local level.
