Martin St. Louis signs new four-year deal with Montreal Canadiens

Martin St. Louis signed a four-year contract with the Montreal Canadiens on Monday. The deal for the 51-year-old, who has led the team since February 9, 2022, takes effect immediately; his previous contract, which still had one year left, was voided upon signing.

As the NHL reports, general manager Kent Hughes praised St. Louis’s contribution, saying he has done an excellent job with the young group, is a good communicator and teacher, and the club expects him to help shape a team with trophy potential. As a player, St. Louis recorded 1,033 points (391 goals, 642 assists) in 1,134 games over 16 NHL seasons with the Calgary Flames, Tampa Bay Lightning and New York Rangers, and was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2018. He was initially named interim Canadiens coach on February 9, 2022, and on June 1, 2022, was confirmed as the 32nd coach in club history.

Under his guidance, Montreal has a combined 163-155-47 record over the last five seasons, including 48-24-10 last season, when it finished third in the Atlantic Division and reached the Eastern Conference Final, where it was beaten by the Carolina Hurricanes in five games — the team that went on to win the Stanley Cup.
