MLB proposes game in a national park, raising concerns over precedent in protected-land use

Major League Baseball has proposed staging a special game inside a national park, an idea that could shape how protected land is used and preserved in the future. The administration has examined the possibility of building a stadium in a deep natural area, sparking debate over the environmental and legal impact of such a project.

As Bleacher Report reports, MLB has addressed this proposal to the Trump administration and various locations have been considered, including Grand Teton, to build a baseball park that would host an official game. The White House confirmed that the possibility of an event “similar to Field of Dreams” has been legally discussed, but no special permits have been issued; league officials have cited the Field of Dreams event as a source of inspiration, and this initiative is part of several ideas MLB is considering.

The proposal has raised concerns that permitting sports infrastructure on national park territory could set a precedent for other commercial uses of protected land. In recent years other cases have also put the relationship between hosting sporting events and environmental preservation at the center of debate, with some solutions for major events implemented on private property near protected areas or with strict limits on public attendance.

The Field of Dreams event was held again this year in a permanent stadium at the site where the film was shot in Dyersville, Iowa, where the Philadelphia Phillies against the Minnesota Twins drew 7,163 spectators, as resale market ticket prices often exceeded $1,000. The leagues have also planned two special games for next season: another Field of Dreams game between the Boston Red Sox and the Kansas City Royals in Dyersville and a Little League Classic between the Toronto Blue Jays and the Chicago Cubs in Williamsport, United States.
