Sattler: EU Ready to Support Montenegro in the Final Steps, But the Key Steps Are Montenegro’s Own to Take

Johan Sattler, Head of the EU Delegation to Montenegro, said the EU and its member states are ready to support Montenegro in the final steps toward membership, but the key final steps must be taken by Montenegro itself.

He announced that last evening, together with Prime Minister Milojko Spajić and Ireland’s Ambassador Kevin Colgan — as representative of the Irish presidency of the EU Council — they hosted the member-state delegates representing the Council’s Working Party on Enlargement (COELA) and the working group for preparing the Accession Treaty.

The presence of all 27 member states in Montenegro is, according to him, a strong message of commitment to Montenegro’s membership. “Now is the time for unity and focus,” Sattler said, with broad political support for completing the remaining work.

The key rule-of-law obligations to be met in Parliament are: establishing the Central Election Commission, electing the missing members of the Judicial Council, and adopting the second package of constitutional amendments on immunity and integrity verification.

“Montenegro has made significant progress. Now is the time to keep up the momentum and take the accession process firmly into its final phase,” Sattler said.
