Schumer blasts Trump over drawn-out Iran war: “We’re in month eight” as he accuses Republicans of voting to continue it
Senate Democratic minority leader Chuck Schumer has sharply criticized President Donald Trump over the duration of the U.S. war with Iran, saying the conflict has entered its eighth month even though it was promised to last only a few weeks.
“Remember when Trump said his war in Iran would last only four to five weeks?” Schumer wrote on the X platform, as Al Jazeera reports in its live blog on the war. “Now we are in month eight, and the American people and our troops are paying the price.”
Schumer added that Senate Republicans had the chance last week to vote to end the conflict but instead voted to continue it. “They are complicit,” the Democratic senator from New York added.
Schumer’s criticism comes as the U.S.-Iran war, which began with American and Israeli strikes on Iran in late February, enters its eighth month with no sign of an imminent ceasefire. Trump said on Monday that the United States would win the war “very soon” and that U.S. officials have spoken with mediators to end the conflict — while at the same time keeping the naval blockade of Iranian ports in force and rejecting Tehran’s seven-day proposal to reopen the Strait of Hormuz.
Concern over the cost of the war is also growing inside the U.S.: according to Pentagon data cited by American media, eighteen U.S. service members have been killed and more than 800 wounded during the conflict, while high fuel and energy prices continue to feed inflation just weeks before November’s midterm elections.
