Siljanovska-Davkova Meets Weitz: Bilateral Issues Must Be Separated From the EU Accession Process

The President of North Macedonia, Gordana Siljanovska-Davkova, today received MEP Thomas Weitz, the European Parliament’s standing rapporteur for the country, who is visiting Skopje these days. Also attending the meeting was the head of the European Union Delegation in the country, Ambassador Michalis Rokas.

At the center of the talks was North Macedonia’s European path and the reforms needed to accelerate the accession process. The President emphasized that bilateral issues must remain separate from the European integration process — a key message in the current political debate about the country’s European future.

Siljanovska-Davkova’s stance comes at a moment when Skopje faces pressure over constitutional changes and Sofia’s demands, which have blocked the opening of negotiating chapters with Brussels. According to the Presidency, separating bilateral issues from the accession process is a precondition for a fair, merit-based process.

For his part, MEP Weitz reaffirmed the European Parliament’s support for North Macedonia’s European perspective, underlining the importance of continuing reforms in the field of the rule of law and the fight against corruption.
