“The Haunting of Hill House” Comes to the Stage for the First Time: Full Cast Announced for World Premiere at Salisbury Playhouse

One of the most frightening novels in world literature is coming to the theatre stage for the first time. Wiltshire Creative has revealed the full cast for the world premiere adaptation of Shirley Jackson’s The Haunting of Hill House, with a script by Olivier and BAFTA winner Stef Smith, which will premiere at Salisbury Playhouse.

Martin Constantine directs, and the cast is led by Jasper Britton as Dr. Montague, Jemma Churchill as Mrs. Montague, Sian Howard as Mrs. Dudley, Sophie Lenglinger as Theo, Robin Morrissey as Luke and Clancy Ryan as Eleanor. Understudies are Eleanor Hague and Darryl Oakley.

“Shirley Jackson created one of the greatest haunted house stories ever written, and it is an extraordinary honour to adapt it for the stage,” said Stef Smith. “I am so excited by this cast, whose talent, sensitivity and imagination will breathe new life into these characters. I can’t wait for audiences to experience The Haunting of Hill House in a completely new way!”

The production, a collaboration between Wiltshire Creative and Theatr Clwyd, runs at Salisbury Playhouse from September 11 to October 3, continues at Richmond Theatre from October 6 to 10, and then embarks on a UK-wide tour — to Theatr Clwyd, Theatre Royal Brighton, Palace Theatre Manchester, Liverpool Everyman and Playhouse, and Royal Lyceum Theatre, closing at Cambridge Arts Theatre on November 21.

Shirley Jackson’s iconic novel is widely regarded as one of the greatest works of supernatural fiction, also familiar to a younger generation through the well-known Netflix series of the same name. “A ghost can be many things. A memory, a daydream, a secret, grief, anger, guilt,” the author writes in one of the work’s emblematic quotes. In the new production, when a group of brave investigators takes on the mystery of Hill House, curiosity quickly turns to fear — and the house tightens its grip on them until the final curtain.
