Yankees–Orioles game canceled due to weather; season finale will not be made up

A steady rain storm in the Northeast region brought an early end to the regular season for the New York Yankees and the Baltimore Orioles, as the final Sunday matchup was canceled and will not be rescheduled.

According to Bleacher Report, after the cancellation the Yankees finish the season at 93-68, while the Orioles finish at 79-82. New York had lost the first game of the series on Friday 10-2, but won Saturday’s game 6-3 to close the season on a positive note ahead of the playoffs. In addition, the Yankees will face rival Boston Red Sox again in the wild-card round, for the second straight time and the seventh time in postseason history; New York won the playoff series last year and also won this year’s regular-season series 7-6.

The club also announced its rotation for the games against Boston: Cam Schlittler is expected to start the first game on Tuesday; the 25-year-old went 14-6 this season with a 1.95 ERA and 239 strikeouts, and was dominant in last year’s playoffs against Boston, where he tallied 12 strikeouts over eight scoreless innings. Left-hander Max Fried is expected to take the mound for the second game, while Gerrit Cole would start the third game on Thursday if needed. Aiming for their first World Series title since 2009, the team will try to make use of the extra rest after the game’s cancellation.

According to Bleacher Report, the cancellation decision allowed for calmer preparation ahead of the rivalry with Boston and sealed the final regular-season records of both teams.
