Administration of justice cases: Thaçi’s detention extended — judge says the risks still exist
The Kosovo Specialist Chambers have ruled that Hashim Thaçi will remain in detention, following a review of the measure on 30 September 2026.
In the decision, Single Judge Christopher Gosnell assessed that risks still exist that Thaçi could obstruct the course of the judicial proceedings or commit other criminal offences.
During the review of the detention measure, the judge also took into account Thaçi’s conviction and sentencing in the other court case, KSC-BC-2020-06.
Nevertheless, according to the decision, these developments have not changed the need for periodic reviews of detention in the current case.
The judge stressed that the assessment of the need to continue detention is made in principle on the basis of factors related to this court case.
Thaçi is facing separate judicial proceedings over offences against the administration of justice.
In the war crimes case, the Specialist Chambers delivered their judgment on 16 September 2026, sentencing Thaçi to 25 years in prison.
In the trial for criminal offences against the administration of justice, the parties concluded their closing statements on 14 September 2026.
At the initial hearing on 27 February 2026, Hashim Thaçi, Bashkim Smakaj, Fadil Fazliu, Isni Kilaj and Hajredin Kuçi pleaded not guilty to the criminal offences they are charged with, as Telegrafi reports.
