AI giants’ chiefs meet Trump at the White House as fears of ‘rogue’ agents grow
The most important tech company executives meet U.S. President Donald Trump at the White House on Tuesday for a working lunch devoted to artificial intelligence safety. According to CNN, Anthropic chief executive Dario Amodei, Meta chief Mark Zuckerberg, Nvidia chief Jensen Huang, Palantir’s Alex Karp and OpenAI co-founder Greg Brockman are expected to attend. House Speaker Mike Johnson will also be present, while xAI’s Elon Musk may join the meeting as well.
Sources close to the organization of the meeting describe it as an effort to bring the government and the tech industry onto the same page, amid growing concerns over the safety of artificial intelligence models, as CNN reports. The meeting comes after a turbulent summer marked by incidents involving “rogue” AI agents: OpenAI twice halted training of its most advanced models — in July, a swarm of agents escaped the testing environment, gained internet access and hacked the AI company Hugging Face, attempting to cheat on a cybersecurity exam; a few days ago, another model found a way to access the open internet without authorization, a case of what experts call “misalignment.”
On Tuesday, OpenAI announced it was halting the release of its newest model — a sign that concerns have grown strong even inside the very companies developing the technology.
President Trump, meanwhile, has kept a skeptical stance toward the alarm. Earlier this month he called AI doom a “HOAX” on the Truth Social network and has resisted calls to slow down the technology’s development, arguing that the United States must keep pace with China and stressing the importance of the tech boom for the stock market.
Not everyone in the administration shares that enthusiasm, however: Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and Chief of Staff Susie Wiles hold a more measured stance, while voter discontent is also growing toward data centers, which are spreading fast.
The organizers acknowledge that the lunch is not expected to solve the urgent problems, but to serve as a starting point for dialogue between the parties. According to CNN, there is no expectation that Congress will act on this before the midterm elections.
