AI leadership at the White House: who will meet Trump and what they will discuss

Some of the most powerful names in the global artificial intelligence industry are heading to the White House on Tuesday for a meeting with Donald Trump and House Speaker Mike Johnson.

The focus is expected to be on one of the most open questions tied to the rapid development of AI: what oversight framework should exist and how far it can go, in the view of the US government, without hindering innovation.

According to CNN, the meeting will be attended by Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg, Google CEO Sundar Pichai and OpenAI president Greg Brockman.

Agence France-Presse also confirmed the presence of Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei and Nvidia chief Jensen Huang.

The main topic of the meeting will be artificial intelligence oversight, as Mike Johnson mentioned in an interview.

The issue is causing different approaches within the US presidential majority, while Donald Trump has so far rejected the possibility of strict regulations on artificial intelligence.

Johnson also appears to be against imposing “strict limits” or a “moratorium” on the technology’s development, but believes there is room for congressional intervention.

“We need to include the big AI players in the conversation about what the supposed safeguards should look like, because they are the ones who know the most” about the technology, the Republican House speaker said.

The oversight debate has intensified in recent months, following a series of incidents reported by companies such as OpenAI, Anthropic, Google and Meta.

The AI safety issue has now moved into the political arena, just weeks before the November 3 midterm elections in the US.

Concern is also registering with the American public. According to a CNN poll conducted in mid-September, 82% of Americans say they are concerned about the speed at which artificial intelligence is developing.

Elon Musk is also expected in Washington today. The entrepreneur will take part in the launch of a new website that will bring together, with the help of artificial intelligence, various federal government agencies.

The White House meeting comes as Washington tries to find a balance between developing artificial intelligence and the need for oversight rules, with the industry’s big companies now at the center of the relevant discussion.
