Anthropic warns: US government stances could harm its client relationships
Anthropic has warned in its IPO prospectus that the US government’s stances towards the company and its technology could have wider consequences for its business, including relationships with clients and trading partners, as Reuters reports after reviewing the document.
In the prospectus the company cites several interactions with the US government over the past year as examples of actions that could harm its business: in February the president ordered federal agencies to stop using Anthropic’s models, while the Department of Defense declared the company a national-security “supply chain risk”, as Reuters writes.
In June, the Department of Commerce imposed worldwide export restrictions on the Fable 5 and Mythos 5 models, forcing the company to disable them for all clients in order to comply with the rules; the restrictions were later lifted and the models republished, but Anthropic warns that similar actions could recur in the future.
“The company could suffer material revenue losses or business interruption,” the document states. Such measures could bring, according to the company, “considerable reputational harm — negative media coverage, public scrutiny and negative perceptions from clients, partners, employees and investors” — regardless of the final outcome.
Revenue from contracts with government agencies makes up less than 1 per cent of the company’s annual revenue, but Reuters notes that the disclosure is broader: the government’s perceptions of the company could extend beyond direct relationships and affect clients and trading partners. The warning comes as calls for stricter regulation of artificial intelligence have grown, and the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) is conducting a broad investigation into AI firms, including Anthropic.
