“Bill Pay the Musical”: Billy Porter, Billy Zane and Jessica Vosk in one-night-only industrial musical on Broadway
Broadway saw one of the year’s most unusual productions this weekend: as Playbill reports, the online bill-pay platform Ramp staged the original musical “Bill Pay The Musical” at the Broadhurst Theatre for a single night on September 25.
The cast was led by Tony winner Billy Porter (“Kinky Boots”), “Titanic” film star Billy Zane and Jessica Vosk (“Beaches”, “Wicked”). Alongside them were Rema Webb as Rampa, plus an ensemble featuring Karli Dinardo, Katie Griffith, Indya Lincicome, Drew Minard, Shannon Mullen, Cole Newburg, Will Porter and Brandon Stonestreet; casting was by Patrick Goodwin.
According to Playbill, the show offered original music, jokes and playful references to the company’s payments product, crafted in the style of mid-20th-century industrial musicals — the tradition of American corporate spectacles once written specifically for business conventions.
The musical features a book by Kevin Zak (“Ginger Twinsies”) and music and lyrics by Jason Michael Snow (“The Book of Mormon”). Direction is by Keaton Wooden, choreography by Antoinette DiPietropolo, music direction by Adam Laird, with music supervision, orchestrations and arrangements by Ben Cohn. Scenic design is by Paul Tate de Poo III, costumes by Andrea Hood, lighting by Karen Spahn, sound by Sun Hee “Sunny” Kil, and wigs, hair and makeup by J. Jared Janas and Dotty Petersen.
“Bill Pay The Musical” is, according to the company, Ramp’s latest comedic marketing push, following the viral campaigns “Brian’s Office”, “Funeral for the Penny” and “Brian’s Hair”.
