ChatGPT reaches 1.2 billion weekly users, OpenAI announces at DevDay 2026
OpenAI announced today at its annual DevDay 2026 conference, as The Verge reports, that ChatGPT has reached 1.2 billion weekly users — a big jump from the 1 billion the platform passed in July. The news came during a day full of more than 20 new launches from the company.
In the official DevDay summary, OpenAI speaks of “1.2B weekly users” collectively for its products, also cited by Thurrott — an indication that the company is measuring the achievement at a broad scale, beyond ChatGPT itself. Nevertheless, ChatGPT itself remains the main product attracting hundreds of millions of new users.
Today’s announcement came amid several important launches, including the “Dots” agents and the new GPT-6.1 Sol model, as The Verge reports — launches that show OpenAI is expanding its product range at a time when competition in artificial intelligence is intensifying.
The growth from 1 billion in July to 1.2 billion weekly users within a few months strengthens OpenAI’s position as the undisputed leader in consumer artificial intelligence, as rival companies try to catch up.
