Closing arguments in the obstruction-of-justice case: trial continues in The Hague today
The trial in The Hague against former Kosovo President Hashim Thaçi, as well as Bashkim Smakaj, Isni Kilaj, Fadil Fazliu and Hajredin Kuçi, who are accused of criminal offenses against the administration of justice, will continue today with the parties’ closing arguments.
The accused face charges of criminal offenses against the administration of justice.
The prosecution has requested a six-year prison sentence for Thaçi, three years each for Smakaj, Kilaj and Fazliu, and nine months of imprisonment for Kuçi. These requests have been opposed by the defense teams.
During the closing arguments, Thaçi’s lawyer, Sophie Menegon, has argued that there was no group aiming to obstruct justice. She described the evidence presented by the Prosecution in support of the charges as unfounded.
The defense has also emphasized that the former president is accused of attempted interference, not of committing the criminal act itself.
All defense teams have concluded their submissions, asking the court to acquit their clients on all counts of the indictment.
The session is expected to continue today at 10:30 AM, Kosovo local time, with the parties’ responses and comments.
