Commanders expected to sign running back Austin Ekeler
The Commanders are expected to bring back running back Austin Ekeler, who will join the 53-man roster if he passes the medical examination.
As nfl reports, the team is close to signing the free agent after Ekeler worked out last week with the Carolina Panthers; instead he will return to the club where he previously played.
The 31-year-old was injured last year, suffering an Achilles injury after two games, but has now recovered and is expected to join the team. Signed as an undrafted player, Ekeler spent his first seven seasons with the L.A. Chargers and moved to Washington in 2024. During his time in D.C. he recorded 410 rushing yards on 91 attempts with four touchdowns, as well as 404 yards on 40 receptions in 14 games.
Ekeler comes to bolster an attack that has found no consistency in the first three weeks: Jacory Croskey-Merritt leads with 142 yards on 47 attempts (3.02 yards per attempt) and one touchdown, while Rachaad White has 100 yards on 22 attempts and 51 yards on 9 receptions with one TD, according to nfl.
