‘Double standards and hypocrisy’ – Çitaku with a new reaction to the British ambassador

Democratic Party of Kosovo MP Vlora Çitaku has reacted again to the United Kingdom’s ambassador to Kosovo, Jonathan Hargreaves, accusing him of double standards in relation to the issue of the independence of the judiciary.

Çitaku recalled the British ambassador’s positions in support of the Kosovo Specialist Chambers, referring to statements that the United Kingdom does not interfere in judicial matters and that it believes in independent justice.

In her reaction, the PDK MP also drew attention to reports of a 2024 phone call between the former British foreign secretary, David Cameron, and the chief prosecutor of the International Criminal Court, Karim Khan.

The British government has confirmed that the call between Cameron and Khan took place on April 23, 2024, while the claims that pressure was exerted on the chief prosecutor during it were made by Khan himself and have been reported by the media. David Cameron was British foreign secretary from November 2023 to July 2024.

Referring to this case, Çitaku criticised the fact that, according to her, Ambassador Hargreaves has not reacted publicly.

“This silence is hard not to see as a double standard and as hypocrisy: in Kosovo there is constant talk of the independence of the judiciary and of non-interference in judicial matters, while in the face of a case that directly touches the United Kingdom, silence seems to be the ambassador’s choice,” Çitaku wrote.

She stressed that she agrees with the principle of the independence of the judiciary, but asked that the same standard apply in every case.

“If justice must be independent, and I agree that it must be, then it must be uninfluenced and independent for everyone. Even when it concerns you, Mr. Ambassador!” Çitaku concluded./Telegrafi.
