EU unblocks €6.6 billion in military aid for Ukraine — Kallas: “Good news for Ukraine, bad news for Russia”
The European Union has agreed to unblock €6.6 billion ($7.5 billion) in EU funds tied to military aid for Ukraine, the EU’s foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas announced on Friday.
The money will come from the European Peace Facility, the fund EU member states use to finance military aid for countries outside the bloc and to reimburse governments that have sent arms to Kyiv.
According to Kallas, €900 million will go to the EU’s military mission for Ukraine, while €1 billion will be used for joint purchases of new military equipment.
The remaining €4.7 billion will serve to reimburse member states, several of which have said they will direct their share toward Ukraine.
“Good news for Ukraine and bad news for Russia,” Kallas wrote in a post on X. “Moscow’s hybrid attacks are trying to scare Europe into reducing its support for Ukraine. Europe is doing the opposite.”
The funds had been blocked for months, initially by the previous Hungarian government under pro-Russian prime minister Viktor Orbán.
It is still unclear how much of these funds will directly benefit Ukraine, as that will depend on individual governments on how much of the reimbursements they allocate to new military aid for Kyiv.
