Focus — Bremerhaven becomes NATO’s strategic port, Germany invests 1.5 billion euros

BREMEN, Sept 29 /ATSH-DPA/ — Germany has finalized plans to modernize the North Sea port of Bremerhaven, which will serve as a key hub for NATO in the event of a military emergency.

Around 1.5 billion euros will be invested in the project.

Bremerhaven, about 60 kilometers north of Bremen, will be prepared for the rapid transport and deployment of NATO troops and military equipment, in the event of an attack on the alliance.

German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius signed the project agreement today in Bremen, after several months of negotiations between the federal government, the German military and the authorities of the state of Bremen.

The federal government will invest 1.35 billion euros by 2031, while the state of Bremen will contribute 200 million euros.

The rest could come from private investors.

Works are expected to begin this year and be completed in 2031.

A new bridge for heavy vehicles will be built, port areas will be reinforced and road and rail connections improved.

Port basins will also be deepened, a new fire station will be built and logistics areas at Bremen airport will be expanded.

Pistorius said the port will be particularly important in the event of an attack on NATO, as tens of thousands of soldiers will need accommodation and supplies, while military equipment arriving from allied countries must be transported further by road, rail and bridges.

Germany also plans a second military port

At the same time, Germany is considering building a second port for the navy in the city of Emden, on the North Sea.

Currently, the German navy has only one main port, in Wilhelmshaven, near Bremerhaven.

According to sources, the military is looking in Emden for an area of about 40 hectares, with the possibility of expanding by another 10 hectares.

The new port could host seven frigates, 10 minesweepers and 10 tugboats, while thousands of military and civilian personnel would be employed there.

Minister Pistorius is expected to visit Emden on October 5, together with the prime minister of Lower Saxony, to discuss the next steps for a possible new naval base.
