FOCUS – Russian drone strike near Ukraine-Poland border hits train; Boris Johnson had passed shortly earlier

– A Russian drone struck a train near the Ukraine-Poland border, in the Yahodyn area in western Ukraine, hitting the locomotive. No casualties were reported, writes the BBC.

Ukrainian authorities said all passengers had been evacuated before the strike.

Ukraine’s state railway company, Ukrzaliznytsia, said a jet-powered drone had been detected and the evacuation order was given about 15 minutes before the strike.

Former British prime minister Boris Johnson had passed along the same railway line shortly earlier, together with several of Europe’s most senior security advisers, including the United Kingdom’s Jonathan Powell. They were returning from a conference in Kyiv.

Ukrzaliznytsia confirmed that the train carrying Johnson and the other officials had been at the Yahodyn station earlier and that a decision was made for it to leave the station earlier than planned.

Boris Johnson reacted after the strike, saying he did not understand “what warped logic drove Putin to blow up a stationary Ukrainian locomotive on the Polish border.”

“When will we give them the air defense they need?” asked Johnson.

Russia, for its part, said it had struck “railway infrastructure” in western Ukraine.
