General Staff: Russia has lost 1,527,280 troops in Ukraine since Feb. 24, 2022

Russia has lost around 1,527,280 troops in Ukraine since the start of its full-scale invasion on Feb. 24, 2022, the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine reported on Sept. 26, according to The Kyiv Independent. The figure includes 1,710 casualties Russian forces suffered in the past 24 hours.

According to the same report, Moscow has also lost 12,376 tanks, 25,435 armored combat vehicles, 153,728 vehicles and fuel tankers, 50,371 artillery systems, 2,160 multiple-launch rocket systems, 1,673 air defense systems, 443 aircraft, 356 helicopters, 2,748 ground drones, 35 ships and boats, as well as two submarines.

The Ukrainian General Staff has not disclosed its own losses during the full-scale invasion, citing operational secrecy. Reports by Western institutes agree that Russian casualties significantly exceed Ukrainian ones: the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS) estimates the ratio at around “2.5:1 or 2:1.”

A January 2026 CSIS report estimated that Ukraine has likely suffered between 500,000 and 600,000 casualties from February 2022 to December 2025, of which between 100,000 and 140,000 are believed to have been killed in combat. President Volodymyr Zelensky told France TV on Feb. 4 that at least 55,000 Ukrainian soldiers have been killed in combat since the start of the full-scale invasion, besides a considerable number of missing persons. The intensity of Russian drone attacks and fighting has made it extremely difficult for Ukraine to recover the bodies of fallen soldiers, needed for DNA confirmation.
