Giants considering adding a veteran quarterback, with Garoppolo and McCarthy on the list
After the season-ending surgery for Jaxson Dart, the New York Giants have installed Jameis Winston as quarterback. It remains unclear whether the former No. 1 pick will remain the team’s solution for the entire season.
As NFL reports, the team is considering adding a veteran at quarterback; names mentioned include Jimmy Garoppolo and Brandon Allen, as well as options like Justin Fields, Mac Jones, J.J. McCarthy and Gardner Minshew. Besides Winston, only Jake Haener is currently on the team’s roster at the position.
Coach John Harbaugh has declared that “all options are on the table,” and the list of circulating names supports that approach. Garoppolo would bring competitive experience, but he has not played meaningful snaps since a single start in 2024; meanwhile, Fields, Jones and McCarthy are former first-round picks who lost starting jobs due to form or injuries and could be interesting alternatives.
Speculation about reinforcements will become moot if Winston performs better lately: he finished 11-of-27 for 111 yards and an interception in the 28–6 loss to the Rams after Dart left the game injured. The Giants (1–1) face the Tennessee Titans (0–2) at MetLife Stadium at 1:00 p.m. ET, and, according to NFL, the results of these starts will influence the club’s decision on adding another quarterback.
